Councilmember Joe Haughey and incumbent Sara Presler have defeated former councilmember Kara Kelty in the primary for the Flagstaff mayoral election. Haughey received the most votes, with 4,214, or 34.92 percent. Presler received 3,963 votes, or 32.84 percent. Kelty received 3,844 votes, or 31.86 percent.
“I’m thankful to the Flagstaff voters and I’ll continue working for them,” Presler said. “We ran a campaign of integrity. It’s a real honor to receive the votes that I did.”
Presler said there will be “philosophical and practical differences” between her and Haughey.

The Lesson: It’s a cold, harsh world out there.
The Story: Back in the day, NAU never called snow storms. There were no online classes, no emails (to announce a cancellation), no convenient snow removal machines. Risks were higher, but less people lived off campus and even out of town, commuting on closed highways. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Northern Arizona (14-14, 8-8 Big Sky) qualified for its 19th Big Sky Championship appearance in school history and ninth in 11 years under Head Coach Mike Adras. The Lumberjacks lost in the quarterfinals to Montana. NAU has now won at least 14 games in 9 of 11 seasons under Adras.

NEW ORLEANS, La. - It has been quite a year for the duo of Interim Director of Track and Field & Cross Country Eric Heins and senior student-athlete David McNeill of Northern Arizona. The pair learned Tuesday that they had each won awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations (USTFCCCA).

OGDEN, Utah - Freshman guard Amy Patton and junior guard Vickie Toney were recognized by the Big Sky Conference as Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced on Monday. Patton, who set the NAU single season record for points scored, also picked up All-Big Sky second-team honors.

The NAU women’s basketball battled back from a 12-point halftime deficit but could not complete the comeback as they fell 68-64 to Montana State tonight at the Walkup Skydome.
After the Lumberjacks held a five-point advantage early in the first half, the two teams jostled for the lead before the Bobcats used a 16-4 run to close the half and enter the intermission up by a dozen.
But down 17 two minutes into the second half, the Lady Jacks awoke and cut their deficit to two points on three occasions.…

Going in as the No. 5 seed in the Big Sky Conference tournament, the NAU men’s basketball team could not pull off the upset, falling to the No. 4 Montana Grizzlies 81-60 at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Mont.
Junior guard Cameron Jones scored 21 points, passing the 1,000 point mark for his career while senior forward Nick Larson, playing in what turned out to be his final game, added 11 points. The Lumberjack bench only mustered a total of 18 points led by junior forward DeAngelo Jones’ nine points.
