Hello NAU and Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break.
Today is March 21, 2011 I'm Brian Lind and this is your daily news update
1. British submarines fired two missiles at Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi’s compound in downtown Tripoli Sunday, a senior coalition official confirmed to Fox News.
The British Ministry of Defense confirmed that Qaddafi was not the target, but that the compound was hit because of its military significance. A Pentagon official had previously said Sunday that the coalition “will not be going after Qaddafi.”
The 4-story compound in downtown Tripoli was home to Qaddafi and was demolished by the attacks, according to reporters near the area.
There were no known injuries, and it remains unclear where the leader has been living since the no-fly zone was ordered.
2. South Carolina creating bill to criminalize Facebook
The proliferation of cell phones smuggled into prisons has some inmates routinely updating their status from the inside, and South Carolina is considering becoming the first state to make that a crime.
The measure would add 30 days to a prisoner's sentence if he is caught interacting on social networking sites via cell phone. The bill goes a step further, too, making it illegal for anyone to set up a page for a prisoner, which legal experts say violates inmates' free speech rights even if they are using contraband cell phones.
Rep. Wendell Gilliard, a Democrat from Charleston who proposed the law, said crime victims shouldn't have to worry about seeing or being threatened by a prisoner online. There's also a fear convicts are coordinating criminal activity.
3. Guide dig goes blind so owner gets new dog to lead both
The 60-year-old man and his wife, Sandra, kept the loyal four-legged helper and adopted a second dog to help lead both man and dog together. The new Labrador, a 2-year-old female named Opal, has become fast friends with her predecessor.
"They've become quite good friends and get on happily together," Waspe, who lives in England and is partially blind, told the New York Daily News.
4. AT@T to buy T-mobile
AT&T Inc. said on Sunday it would buy Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA, in a $39 billion cash-and-stock transaction that would create a new industry behemoth by combining two of the four largest U.S. wireless carriers.
The purchase price includes a cash payment of $25 billion with the balance to be paid using AT&T common stock. AT&T has the right to increase the cash portion of the purchase price by up to $4.2 billion.
As part of the deal, Deutsche Telekom will get about 8 percent stake in AT&T, and a Deutsche Telekom representative will join the AT&T board. AT&T can increase the cash component so long as Deutsche Telekom receives at least a 5 percent equity stake in it.
The agreement has been approved by the boards of both companies.
5. The weather for Monday is a high of 39 and a low of 22 with scattered snow showers throughout the day
