Mister Heavenly is a side project of Honus Honus (Front Man of Man Man), Nick “Neil” Diamonds (Front Man of The Unicorns), and Joe Plummer (Drummer of Modest Mouse and The Shins). Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) also tours with the band as the bassist. The band released their first two songs off their debut album Out of Love in January of 2011. The band is currently signed to one of the largest indie music labels, Sub Pop.
Mister Heavenly describes their sound as “a new sub-genre we are developing, called Doom Wop, which is essentially low frequency, and extremely slowed down music atop traditional doo-wop harmonies”. The album opens up with the track “Bronx Sniper”, which brings elements of bluesy, classic rock. The strong, dark-themed track is followed by a few tracks considered to be “Doom Wop”. Although Honus Honus and Nick Diamonds’s vocals are on the opposite ends of the vocal spectrum, they blend perfectly together on the music to create a mix between dark and uplifting themes.
I am a fan of Man Man, The Unicorns, Modest Mouse, and the Shins, so I needed to check this band out. If you enjoy the bands listed above, there is no doubt you will enjoy Mister Heavenly. “Charylene”, the third track on the album, is one of my favorites on the album. It is clearly influenced by Man Man and the Unicorns. If you enjoy the nostalgia of traditional doo-wop music, or the sounds of the above bands listed above, definitely check Mister Heavenly out.
