Review of Carl Hauck: “Windjammer”

by Ashley "Wil" Williams

When I got Carl Hauck’s album “Windjammer”, I’ll admit I didn’t have high expectations. It wasn’t Carl Hauck; I had no idea who he was when I got the album. It wasn’t the album art; on the contrary, the art is actually really lovely and interesting. It may have been that I’ve had a draught in good new music lately, or it may have been that I was just in a terrible mood. Either way, I wasn’t excited. I started the album with absolute reluctance, but by the time I had finished it the first time, it had already become one of my absolute favorites.

Sufjan Stevens at the Mesa Center of the Arts: My Brain Exploded By Wil Williams

Sufjan Stevens has been one of my favorite artists since the release of Little Miss Sunshine, which featured his undeniably most well-known song, Chicago. When I heard he was coming to Arizona after a two-year hiatus in touring—and a I-have-no-idea-how-long-but-just-way-too long hiatus in playing in Arizona—I immediately bought tickets. If you haven’t heard Sufjan Stevens, he’s a sweet, melody-driven indie folk artist who uses banjo, guitar, and sometimes full orchestras and choirs. His music is lush and almost indulgent in its melodies while still, somehow, being extremely intimate.

Let Broken Bells Change Your Life

If you haven't already heard the songs from new collaborative project Broken Bells, please catch up. You owe it to yourself.

Fans of the Shins know James Mercer for his lyrical genius and knack for creating melodies. Fans of Gnarls Barkley, Pelican City, and other Danger Mouse projects know him as the mastermind behind what are possibly the most brilliant rhythms in decades and one of the most talented producers in music today. But what they create together is something special beyond what might have been expected.

Eels - End Times

Eels' most recent release, End Times, is a solid album, hot on the heels of summer 2009's Hombre Lobo. Mark Oliver Everett, AKA "E," creates an image of a man who finds himself in a world where he belongs less than ever and the lament he feels as he can identify with almost nothing around him. It is indeed a bleak picture, and the tone of the instrumentation reflects it accurately. It may be easy to find yourself lulled from time to time (at least after the second track), though never bored.
